It’s January and most sports fans are now content to watch their sports events inside. Especially after the recent record-breaking cold snap that reached into the single digits. Sunday offers a perfect opportunity to do that for the whole family. The Navy women’s basketball team will square off against the Army squad at noon, followed at 2:30 by the men’s game.

The men’s squad is enjoying an excellent season, posting an 11-5 record so far. The team has done well against others from Maryland, including wins against American, Morgan State and Coppin State. Coach Ed DeChellis is in his seventh year as the head basketball coach and directs a squad led by Shawn Anderson, a 6-4 senior from New Castle, Pa. Anderson leads the team in points (12.4), rebounds (5.8) and assists (3.4). The team is averaging 71.5 points per game.

Anderson continues the Navy tradition of high-character athletes to represent their sports programs. He is one of 30 basketball players across the country selected as a candidate for the 2017-18 Senior CLASS Award. The award singles out athletes with notable achievements in four areas: community, classroom, character and competition. The list will be narrowed to 10 finalists in February.

The women’s team is 11-3 and undefeated in eight games at home. The squad is led by senior Taylor Dunham, who is scoring at a 15.4 points-per-game pace. Dunham is from Fort Belvoir, VA. Six of the players are from either Maryland or Virginia.

The Army-Navy rivalry continues to be intense and stretches across many sports. Currently Navy leads the competition over the last 22 years with a 404-258-10 record, winning nearly 61% of the games.
